The horse receives its feed in a fragmented way, in two or three daily meals, so its stomach is regularly empty continuously. The digestive agents are therefore in prolonged contact with the poorly protected digestive mucosae, which may lead to their erosion and gastric ulcers. Measurement of gastric acidity shows significant variation depending on whether the stomach pH is measured in a horse with an empty stomach (pH<2) or after a meal (pH>6). This is further aggravated by the rapidity of gastric emptying observed with products rich in cereals (half an hour), as opposed to more fibrous rations (e.g. hay), where it takes several hours.
To counteract parasitic loads and prevent parasite infections, dewormers are routinely used around twice a year. Those anthelmintic drugs can impact the microbiota balance, which can disrupt the digestive system (dysbiosis-like gut microbiota, softer feces, etc.).
